Event: Stories from the Magic Canoe

The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) is happening Feb 21 - Mar 1, 2020, and we're pleased to be a partner for their show Stories from the Magic Canoe. Come for the film screening of ATTLA, and stay for the conversation with Briony Penn and Cecelia Reekie. STORIES FROM THE MAGIC CANOE Monday, February 24, 2020 | 7:30pm The Cinematheque 200 – 1131 Howe Street, Vancouver Film Screening: ATTLA (dir. Catherine Axley) "Spanning his fifty-year dogsled racing career, ATTLA explores the life and persona of George Attla, from his childhood as a tuberculosis survivor in the Alaskan interior, to his rise as ten-time world champion and mythical state hero, to a village elder resolutely training his grandnephew to race his team one last time." In Conversation: Briony Penn and Cecelia Reekie "Join Wa’xaid’s daughter Cecelia Reekie and author and annotator Briony Penn who meticulously transcribes Wa’xaid’s stories and teachings in her book – Stories from the Magic Canoe of Wa’xaid. Cecelia and Briony will discuss what reconciliation looks like in all aspects of our lives; whether it is writing and publishing books, making films. Climbing mountains, protecting nature, tackling climate change and industrial destruction, educating children or curating festivals. Cecil’s story of the mountain is a metaphor for this time of crisis; and the need to get into the magic canoe together is our best course of action."
