Once upon a time, in a raunchy port city on Canada’s west coast, two dueling armies came together on the dance floor. While The Smiling Buddha gazed benignly down on rain dark streets, gangs of spiked and pierced toughs roamed the alleyways. Across town in glittering new towers, Disco types boogied and hustled their booties off.

DOXA returns to the Vancouver streets of old with Flipside: Disco vs Punk, a good old-fashioned dance battle and dueling DJ showdown. The evening will feature a live acoustic performance from legendary punk progenitor-turned-city-father Joe Keithley, leader of D.O.A (whose infamous album Disco Sucks may have started the conflagration). Wicked queens of the night – Isolde N. Barron and Peach Cobblah – will MC events, while dancers battle with gyrating hips and pumping fists in Vancouver’s legendary Ironworks.

Flipside will feature film projections from Cineworks, as well as a silent auction with a terrific array of items to bid on including restaurant gift certificates, getaways, artwork and tickets to great cultural events. DOXA’s annual fundraiser helps support the festival and all its programming initiatives including filmmaker attendance, panel discussions, educational programs like Rated Y for Youth, and the presentation of the very best documentary films from around the world.

Pick a side: pull on your sequined platforms, or shave your head, and dig out your studded leather cuffs and Doc Martens (there is a prize for most awesomely outrageous costume). Prepare for a musical rumble that will revive the spirit and rivalries of old in an epic culture clash.
