DOXA Documentary Film Festival’s Motion Pictures Series in partnership with the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is proud to present the Vancouver premiere of Jon Foy’s Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles (Winner of the Directing Award: Documentary at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival).
When mysterious tiles began to appear on the streets and sidewalks of American cities, few people took notice. But the cryptic messages about resurrecting the dead on Planet Jupiter snagged the attention of one man. Justin Duerr set out to uncover the meaning of the tiles, and fell down a veritable rabbit hole of curious allusions and references. From David’s Mamet’s one act play 4AM, to Stanley Kubrick’s science fiction masterwork 2001: A Space Odyssey, to the work of British Historian Arnold J. Toynbee, the tiles hinted at larger forces at work. Shortwave radio and television broadcasts only added to the mystery. As Justin finally begins to unravel the truth, his own role becomes an increasingly large part of the story.
As much an elegant meditation on human strangeness, as a conspiracy theory writ large, Resurrect Dead is an emotionally profound work about the desperate need to be heard and understood.
“Direct from the “truth is stranger than fiction” files, the fascinating, accomplished and surprisingly emotional new documentary thriller Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles should, at the very least, remind bustling city-dwellers that there are more intriguing sights in the urban landscape than the contents of their smart phones.” – The Globe and Mail
“It’s a remarkable movie, both for the questions it poses and the answers it never quite articulates.”
– PopMatters
