- Master Canadian documentary filmmaker & 2002 DOXA participant, Colin Low I believe DOXA to
be a vital and necessary
addition to this city's
film exhibition strategy
as the documentary
form moves more and
more into the fore
of our concerns and
the reflection of our
world takes on a renewed
and vital role in understanding
ourselves. The festival was a
tremendous success.
The full houses attested
to the hunger that
exists for engaged
documentary film and
video production in
Vancouver and to the
creative and stimulating
programming that kept
us coming back night
after night. BC is
a center for independent
documentary filmmaking
in North America. Festivals
like DOXA support the
increasingly active
production community
by bringing new, international
work to the attention
of Canadian filmmakers.
This will in turn help
develop a more mature
and cosmopolitan engagement
with the world and
will lead to more powerful
and more accomplished
work. This festival is long
overdue on the west
coast. Western Canada
and British Columbia
are rich with documentary
filmmakers of note.
I think it is definitely
time that our local
documentary industry
has the chance to take
part in an international
festival, which celebrates
our filmmaking community. Documentary is a medium
with a particularly
rich tradition in Canada.
We are most interested
in seeing an event
such as DOXA proceed
in Vancouver, which
itself has a strong
documentary tradition,
but which until now,
did not have a showcase
or festival specifically
dedicated to the art
of documentary. I was pleased to witness
the creation of a Vancouver
festival dedicated
exclusively to celebrating
the documentary genre.
The first DOXA festival
was a great success
- the thoughtfully
curated programs ran
powerful current works
alongside great past
productions, helping
to place the documentary
form in its historical
context.
